There are plenty of fun events happening all the time in NYC, as the city that never sleeps offers endless opportunity for activities. However, as much as we love our city, not much comes free! IN the summer though, Manhattan does offer it’s resident quite a few free events that New Yorkers flock to. Here are a few fun free events happening that our residents at The Sagamore can take advantage of upcoming weeks.
Shakespeare in the Park: Spring and Summer nights are beautiful with the warm air and cool breeze mixing together to create the perfect weather for sitting outdoors. The Sagamore residents can enjoy some outdoor weather and a show by attending Shakespeare in the Park. Performances take place throughout the sunny weather months at night in Central Park. Tickets can be hard to come by but if you become a member of different cultural groups or enter your name in the lottery you have a good chance of snagging one for some summer entertainment.
Movie Nights: Free movie nights will take place throughout all five boroughs of New York. Starting this month every day you can find multiple movie showings at different parks and locations. Grab a chair, blanket, friends and some snacks and enjoy these free movies in a different environment than parked in front of the television at your Sagamore apartment. Movies scheduled for this year include classics like Aladdin, Rocky and Casablanca to newer must see movies like Brooklyn, The Avengers and Jurassic World. You can see the full schedule by looking at the website.
While many events for Halloween revolve around kids, fortunately we live in New York City, the biggest playground for adults in the world. You don’t have to travel far in Manhattan to find something awesomely adult for Halloween, there’s something around every corner.
Adult Trick or Treating
While in the suburbs kids may go door to door with adults lugging candy bags behind them, in NYC it’s a little different at Halloween. Block parties happen on almost every other block with music, food, Instagram-worthy decorations and just as many adults dressed up as children. Trick or treaters go from store to store instead of door to door and many stores have special sales just for Halloween shopper. In our area, below are some of the most notable blocks for their Halloween parties.
- 79th St between Columbus and Amsterdam Ave
- 78th St between Columbus and Amsterdam Ave
- 87th St between Broadway and West End Ave
- 90th St between Columbus and Amsterdam Ave
- 95th St between Columbus Ave and Central Park West (closed to cars)
St. John’s Church
Church may not be the first place you think of for Halloween, but on the Upper West Side we do things a little differently. On October 30th and October 31st hear the stories of the church’s entombed, learn the origins of Halloween, and creep into the Cathedral’s crypt. The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine (1047 Amsterdam Avenue at 112th Street) is hosting this event, for ages 12 and up. Be sure to bring a flashlight! Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot.
Pet Costume Contest
Because The Sagamore is pet-friendly, we know quite a few of our residents have furry critters. Have fun with your fur baby at this year’s Pet Costume Contest, Unleashed. On October 24th Petco (the 159 Columbus Avenue location) is hosting a costume contest the weekend before Halloween. Bring your pet in to strut their stuff!
